What we are reading this week

Thursday, May 25, 2017

Last week we were reading the first Percy Jackson and I told you all we would probably read the whole series, well I changed my mind.  I just couldn't get into it.  The Greek gods were interesting but I just felt like the characters were not deep enough and I also didn't like how mean everyone was to each other in the book.   If I am reading a book about bullying, then that is fine.  It will show character development and gives me a good jumping off point to talk with the boys about some tough topics.  But this book just struck me as being mean just for the sake of being mean.  Now my boys really liked the book and wanted me to continue reading it, but if they want to finish the series they are going to have to do it on their own. So this means a whole new book list this week.

Nighttime Read- Britton

Nighty-Nightmare by James Howe

Britton and I are working our way through the next book in the Bunnicula series. These books crack me up.  I wish Britton would catch all the jokes that the characters say to each other.  Although he does catch more of them than I would expect.  In this book, we are following Chester, Harold, & Howie to a camping trip in the woods on St. George's Eve.  Of course Chester's overactive imagination is creating quite a few problems for the gang.  These books are so cute.  These are the perfect books to read with your early elementary kids.

Nighttime Read- Greyson & Lincoln

Ranger's Apprentice Book 1- The Ruins of Gorlan

If you know me, you know that I spend a good amount of time every week scrolling through book lists.  This series has popped up quite a few times and I have been very interested in starting it with the boys.  The thing is, this is not the type of book I would usually read.  I'm not really into fantasy books.  (Ok, I know I am a huge Harry Potter fan, but that is different.)  I have never read books like The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings.  They just are not my thing, but yes, they are on my list to get to with the boys.  This series has 12 books in it and we really are just in the introduction phase of the book.  Not much has happened yet.  So I can't say if I will want to read this whole series with the boys, but I know many who have read this series multiple times because they say it is just so good. I'll let you know next week what I am thinking about this series.

Daytime Read- All 3 Boys

The Willoughbys by Lois Lowry

Up next on our 100 book list was another Lois Lowry book.  I was not a fan of Anastasia Krupnik, so I wasn't sure what I would think of this one.  I had never heard of this book before our book list either.  I still can't quite say what I think of this one.  I like the idea of this story, but I think the topic has been covered in a better way by other authors.  It's about 4 children who are hoping to become orphans and are being raised by their nanny while their parents are away on a very dangerous vacation.  And yes, I did say they were hoping to become orphans.  This story has a Series of Unfortunate Events feeling to it. All I can say is that I like parts of this story so far and I'm hoping the bits that I don't like get all nicely wrapped up at the end.

This is what we are reading this week.  I would love any suggestions about books I must share with my boys.  Any favorite series your kids are reading right now?
