Theme of the Week : FIAR Katy and the Big Snow

This was our second week reading Katy & the Big Snow.  We learned about our place in the world and did a fun project for the boys to learn about how large the Earth is and show them where we actually live.  We have done this project before and this time I decided to have them use our home in States instead of Thailand.  I like reminding them about where they are from.

The boys also made a bird's eye view map of a city for their community helper puppets.  They loved this project and have played with this city a few times this week.  I really need to have them do more group projects.  It was fun seeing them work together and help each other out with the buildings they were drawing.

We also learned about snowflakes and read Snowflake Bentley & The Story of Snow to learn how snowflakes are formed and how the first snowflake was photographed.    We also watched a couple short you tube videos on it.  The boys played with shaving cream, a favorite of theirs.  We also built our melting snowman and made snowflake jello jigglers.

100 Book Challenge: Shiloh

We finished up Shiloh this week and I must say this book really tugged at my heart.  Anyone who knows me knows that I am not an animal lover in any way, but this book made me want to adopt a dog!  It was a book with a lot of emotion and brought up some really good conversations about lying and doing what is right with the boys.  On Sunday, we watched the movie and we all thought it did a pretty good job sticking to the book.  Just silly facts were changed.

We are also very close to finishing our 3rd Unfortunate Event book, The Wide Window.

Tea on Tuesday

Tea on Tuesday was so much fun this week. The boys had three letters to open this week with lots of great poems and goodies for them.  We loved reading the poems that the other children had written and it inspired us to write our own poems too.  We read poems on the weather this week, so the boys wrote a cinquain on the weather.  I thought I would share each of their poems.  They wrote them with a little guidance from me, but all of the words were chosen by the boys.

All of our poems from our letters hung up to read

Monsoon
Crackling, aggressive
Speeding, shielding, soaking
I hope it stops.
Down pour
by Greyson

Tornado
Gray, thundering
Screaming, panicking, hiding
Tornadoes are scary.
Funnel cloud
by Lincoln

Thunderstorm
Crash, dark
Flashing, Splashing, Shaking
Storms are scary.
Really rainy.
by Britton

I was pretty happy with their first try.  Some of the lines were a little off, but I thought they all did an excellent job!

Extra Curricululars
After school activities started back up this week and between all three boys, we are busy!  Here is what they are up to this semester.

Greyson:
swimming, piano, t-ball, film making/animation

Lincoln:
swimming, t-ball, piano, Judo, circus skills

Britton:
swimming, piano, letter class

We are also finishing up their last few sessions of clayworks.

We also will be joining in a co-op everything Thursday until April and we are all excited about it!

I am really thankful that we do not have any commitments on Wednesdays this semester.  It will be nice to have at least one evening off.

Other Fun photos

The boys were out of control one afternoon, so they had a dance party.  A dance party fixes everything.

We pretended to have a snow day on Wednesday this week, so the boys and I wore our pajamas all day and turned on the fireplace, read a book and had hot chocolate.  It was so much fun.

Drinking hot cocoa and pajama day

Britton was very studious this week.

We also got our first postcard from our international postcard swap.  This one came from Montana!

That was how our week went this past week.  I plan on changing things up a bit for next week and I am really excited about it!  Hope you all had a great weekend!
