Theme: The Giraffe that Walked to Paris

This is one of my favorite Five in a Row Books to read.  I don't actually have this book as it is out of print and very expensive to buy, but there are two other books that are very similar.  We read "The Giraffe Goes to Paris" by John Harris and "Zarafa: The Giraffe who walked to a King" by Judith St. George.   They are both the story of Belle, the first giraffe to make it to Paris.

We will be reading this book for two weeks.  Our current FIAR schedule is only Monday-Wednesday, so in order to fit in all the fun activities, we will be reading the books for two weeks. Here are a few of our fun activities:

We traced the path from Egypt to Paris.  The path that the Giraffe took.

We measured out how tall Belle was a drew her in chalk.

The boys started a research paper on giraffe.

There are over 250 giraffe at Safari world.

This was a great tie in to our book.

100 Book Challenge: Because of Winn-Dixie

Kate DiCamillo is my favorite children's author.  We have loved almost every singe book by her. The Mercy Watson series was what got both of my older boys interested in reading.  I had heard great things about "Because of Winn-Dixie" and it really does live up to everything that has been said about it.  I loved this book.  The emotion was a great jumping off point for conversations with the boys.  It had some very deep topics, but was brought up in a very appropriate way for younger children.   And really, it was just a very sweet story about a girl and her dog.  I have a feeling this may be on our top five books for 2015!

Tea on Tuesday

With all the talk about snow back in the States, we decided to read poems based on the seasons and reading a poem about the perfect cup of cocoa. The boys had cocoa and cookies for "tea time" and then they all worked on a winter poem to share with their friends back home.  It's nice to pretend that it is cold here every once in a while.  It's still winter here and cold winter temps dip down to the very chilly 70 degrees!

Other Curriculum

I wish I would have gotten both of these books before this year.  They have helped the boys so much with reading comprehension and editing. (Areas they both need a lot of work on.)

Greyson has been learning cursive while the other two boys are practicing their printing.

In Story of the World, we have been learning about the birth of Jesus.  We enjoyed reading this book on Miracles Jesus performed.

Right now in science we are learning about the moon.  We read this fun book and also talked about our trip to the Planetarium in Malaysia, where they had a model of the International Space Station.

Britton working on his Hooked on Phonics workbook and a little math.

The big boys have been loving mad libs.  We have been doing two a week and it is so much fun to hear their silly stories.

Fun Photos

It's so nice that Britton is at the age where he can entertain himself while I am teaching the other boys.  He loves his Rainy Day coloring book.

I had to make Britton a calendar because he has been asking me 100 times a day when his birthday is.  Now he can see when his party is.

We had a big group over for movie night this week.  We had 13 kids over for pizza, snacks and Big Hero 6.  Such a great movie!

One final shot from our trip to Safari World.
