Morning Routine: Calendar, Virtue, & Chores

This week our virtue was forgiveness.  This one is always a hard virtue to work on.  We talked about how we need to always try to be kind and even if someone hurts our feelings we should try as hard as we can to continue to be kind to them.  That is hard to do!  One morning I asked the boys to draw a picture of something that really hurt their feelings and when I turned on Pandora, the song was "Let it Go" from Frozen.  It was perfect timing.  Then, after the drawings were finished the boys had to rip them up.  This really helped us illustrate what it means to forgive.

Math

Britton started Horizon's Kindergarten math this week.  He is so proud of himself.  Lincoln has been working on multiplication & subtracting with borrowing.  Greyson is working long division, map reading, & adding numbers in the 10,000's.

Sensory, Hooked on Phonics, ABC Mouse & Writing

Britton had fun playing with his bubble car wash.  Water play is always fun.  We also made edible water beads from tapioca pearls.  It would have worked a lot better if I would have bought the 5 minute cook ones, but I didn't.  So, I had to soak the pearls over night and then cook them forever. We added food coloring to the pearls.  The boys played with them for about 5 minutes and were over it.  So, not a huge it in our house, but I love trying new sensory activities.  Britton is almost finished with ABC Mouse and he is loving the Hooked on Phonics app.

Theme of the Week: Five in a Row

Britton started Before Five in a Row and and we read Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear?  I did a separate post on this and all the fun we had, so click on the title to see what we did.

Greyson and Lincoln started Five in a Row and we read Very Last First Time.  I also did a separate post on this.  We had a lot of fun learning about the arctic and the Inuit.  Check out all the fun we had this week in Five in a Row.

Science

The boys are still working on their Nancy Larson Science and we were still learning about sound. Ben happened to have a couple days off this week and was able to demonstrate how the strings on a guitar can make different pitch depending on their length.  We also tested pitch on the xylophone. We finished up our sound unit and then started learning about light.  The boys learned what transparent, translucent, and opaque.

100 Book Challenge

This week we were reading Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson.

Story of the World

We were learning about the great empire of Alexander the Great.  We read about how he became in control of much of the world after figuring out how to loosen the Gordian knot. The boys practiced tying knots.  We also watched a couple of movies about Alexander the Great's life on Netflix. We also watched a Horrible Histories that had a segment with Alexander the Great.

Art

All of our art was covered in our Five in a Row and Before Five in a Row curriculum.  The older boys made the Aurora Borealis, Inuit paper doll, pointillism with warm and cool colors. Britton made a pattern bear.

Extracurricular Activities

The boys had another lesson at Clayworks. Britton worked on mixing 3 colors together.  Greyson and Lincoln made the alien from Toy Story and a super hero ring.  Piano started back up this week.  The boys also started working on Duo Lingo Spanish.

Fun Moments

Tuesday was Thai Mother's Day (it was the Queen's birthday) and we had a great time picking out flowers for some very special people in our lives.  The boys each picked out roses for our maid, who has been with us for the past 3 years.  We are so lucky to have her as a part of our lives. She helps keep me sane.  We also picked out flowers for their wonderful piano teacher.  We are so blessed to have some wonderful people in our lives here.
